This genotype results from an A-61C SNP (single-nucleotide polymorphism) in the promoter region of the Hp gene, which causes a decreased gene expression . The Hp 0 phenotype can also result from a deletion in the promoter region of the Hp gene (Hpdel allele), especially in the South-Asian population.
