I was experiencing an identity crisis as well as bereavement from my creation – the business. I wasn’t the only one who seemed to be living my life in this mad way. I would observe other women friends and colleagues rushing to the gym or for a massage in a panic. Why were we all living like this? I wondered. Often I didn’t even have time to relieve my bladder as I rushed from meeting to phone call to therapist to meeting. If only I’d kept some of that time just for personal space, even a couple of minutes between meetings, I later reasoned, I could have saved myself a fortune in the latest anti-stress cure.

They were all slightly younger than me and had emerged out of the London art college and squat scene. It was the early 1980s and London fashion and music was about to undergo a huge revival.
